Father's Day is coming this weekend. Out of fairness, I want to say that I recognize that there are all kinds of fathers. Different shapes and size. Different temperaments and different styles, however I am reminded of the role that Joseph took in the life of Jesus to shape him into the man that He became. I wonder if Jesus ever needed a spanking (or pow pow as our granddaughter adaline says." In spite of knowing that he was not the biological father of Jesus, Joseph role was enormous in His life. He protected him by fleeing to egypt with Mary and living far away to make sure Jesus was safe. He taught him the trade of being a carpenter which Jesus was for all the years before His ministry. He ensured that Jesus was brought up in the temple and took him to Jerusalem as a young child so He could hear and see the faithfulness of God to His people. He protected Mary, Jesus mother when she could have been stoned and killed for becoming pregnant outside of marriage. This is a role model of fatherhood but most importantly, this is a man who lived His faith. He lived out what God asked him to do and became the earthly role model and protector to the Savior of the world. Jesus understood the role of God the Father by the example set before Him in His earthly existence of Joseph.
Several years ago, the Gaithers performed a song called a A Few Good Men. I will put the video link with lyrics below. Written, not by Bill and Gloria Gaither, but by their daughter and her husband it tells of the need our world has for men who follow God. We have a nation struggling today. I wonder if we could just have Godly, just and good men who could become mentors, role models, passionate believers in what is right and good, what would our world look like today. Would we have the chaos we are witnessing today. What if we understood compassion and protection of others by the examples of Joseph and many others who will take on the raising of our children and families. Would we still have issue, probably, but I am sure they would not be as severe. We don't need preachers, we don't authorities, we don't need an army to make this world better. Maybe we just need a few good men who can teach the principles of faith, honor and compassion to a dying world.
As the song says, "He just needs a few good men. Men full of compassion who laugh and love and cry. Men who'll face eternity and aren't afraid to die. Men, who'll fight for freedom and honor once again." Watch the lyrics and ask can I be that man or woman who changes the world rather than exists in it. Happy Father's Day.
